Here Are Chicago’s Top 10 Residential Sales of 2018

 

 

A record year for luxury sales saw a number of pricey properties trade hands.

 

A total of $70 million was spent on the top 10 sales, two Winnetka mansions that sold for $12 million each tying for first place on the list.

 

Six of the 10 most expensive home sales were for condos, three in the No. 9 Walton luxury condo building in the Gold Coast, where notable Chicagoans have been buying up units. Two other condo sales to make the list were recorded at the Trump International Hotel & Tower in River North.

 

The list was compiled using data from Cook County records for sales between Jan. 1 and Dec. 20.

 

 

A three-week stretch in the spring produced the area's two most expensive home sales of the year. The first was recorded in late April when the eight-bedroom new-construction mansion at 1035 Sheridan Road in Winnetka sold for $12 million. It was sold by Northfield-based Heritage Luxury Builders and was bought through a trust.

 

 

The second $12 million sales came three weeks later and just seven blocks away, for a lakefront mansion at 381 Sheridan Road. The 5,5000-square foot home sold before it went on the market. The last time a Winnetka home sold for $12 million was in 2013.

 

 

This Lincoln Park mansion sold after hitting the market in June with an asking price of $13 million. The 8,000-square foot home sits on nearly four city lots and was sold by Conrad and Elizabeth Von Peterffy, owners of a Swiss blind and awning manufacturer. The sale closed in late August to an unknown buyer.

 

 

This 6,850-square foot, four-bedroom condo in Trump Tower sold in March after three price cuts. Retired Eaton Corporation Executive Thomas Gross and their wife, Michelle, listed the unit in 2016 for $12.7 million, slashed the ask three times, and eventually sold at $9.4 million. The buyer was a trust linked to billionaire investor and Chaifetz Group founder Richard Chaifetz.

 

 

The third Winnetka mansion on the list was the first to be sold this year, when this 15,000-square-foot home sold on Jan. 5 for $8.9 million. The lakefront home has 8 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a pool, golf simulator, and sports court. Selling the home was Heritage Luxury Builders, the same group that built and sold a $12 million mansion in Winnetka.

 

 

The first of three units at No. 9 Walton on this list is also the most recent purchase on the list. An unknown buyer on Dec.4 spent $8.9 million on this condo in JDL Development's luxury tower. The Gold Coast tower has seen the most expensive residential purchase in Chicago's history and a number of notable Chicagoans on its ownership roster.

 

 

A trader once disciplined by the Securities Exchange Commission picked up this 33rd-floor unit in No. 9 Walton for $8.2 million in late November. Buying the property was Jeffrey Wolfson, who in 2012 settled with the SEC after being accused of making millions in illegal short sales while a trader at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange.

 

 

A then-unfinished penthouse in the Ritz Carlton Residences off North Michigan Avenue was sold in June for $1 million less than its asking price. The unknown buyer picked up the 6,6000-square foot condo with four bedrooms, 12-foot ceilings, and three terraces.

 

 

The second Trump Tower unit on this list was bought by Judith Blazer, the wife of Robert Chaifetz, the billionaire who bought the unit just below it in Trump Tower. Selling this 5,500-square-foot, three-bedroom unit was Florida-based investor Waltraud Legat, who bought the apartment in 2009 for $3.7 million.

 

 

The third unit at No. 9 Walton on this list was sold by JDL in early November. Buying the four-bedroom, 4,800-square-foot apartment were Neil and Sharon Book. Neil is the chief executive and president of Jet Support Services Inc.
